Munster, KZN South Coast — a local’s guide
Munster is one of the last quiet villages on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast — a few streets of holiday houses under coastal forest, between the Mtamvuna River and Glenmore. There is no main road through town and no high-rise on the beach, which is exactly why people keep coming back.
The beaches
Munster’s own beach is a mix of sand and rock shelves with some of the best rock pools on the coast at low tide. For swimming, Glenmore Beach five minutes south has a tidal pool and lifeguards in the holidays.
The Nightingale wreck
The rusted boiler of the Nightingale has sat on the Munster rocks for the best part of a century. It is an easy walk along the shore and the best spot on the coast for sunset photos.
Dolphins & whales
Bottlenose dolphins pass most mornings, and from June to November humpback whales migrate close inshore — take coffee to the stoep and watch the backline.
Day trips
Port Edward and the Wild Coast Sun are 15 minutes away; Oribi Gorge is about an hour inland; Margate and Shelly Beach have the malls, restaurants and the Saturday markets.
